Keep Your Pants On
The blue cup with Akaroa lighthouse represents the French explorer (Jean-Franois Langlois). In 1838 he paid a deposit for Akaroa to the Maoris which included amongst other things 2 cloaks, 6 pairs of trousers, some pistols and 2 shirts. He headed back to France to gather a group to assist him in developing Akaroa as a French colony. Unfortunately by the time he returned to New Zealand, the Maoris had signed the Treaty of Waitangi with the British and a British flag was at Akaroa on their return. Fortunately due to some amicable negotiations between the French and the British, Langlois was still able to settle in Akaroa as planned.
