Dual earrings that contrast the beautiful grey with bright colours of the Kkako wattles.
In Mori myth, the kkako filled its wattles with water and brought it to Maui as he fought the sun. Maui rewarded the bird by making its legs long and slender, enabling it to bound through the forest with ease.
North Island: Blue wattle
South Island: Orange wattle

INTERESTING KKAKO FACTS:
- North IslandKkako have a pink wattle that turns blue as they mature.
- South IslandKkako are presumed extinct as there have been no confirmed sightings since 1967. Although there have been recordings of songs that may be elusive birds, one as recently as December 2021.
- Female North IslandKkako do all the brooding of their 50 day incubation, making them more vulnerable to predation than males.
